Hello My Name Is...

Heber Olguin 


It is with great honor to introduce myself: I have been an educator for more than 20 years serving in different capacities: High School Science Teacher, Transportation Director, School Principal, and currently a Middle School Science Teacher. I also served this great country's military for over 30 years working at different parts of the world culminating this great service this year 2016. I graduated from the University of Texas Pan Am with a Bachelors in Biology and from UT at Brownsville with a Master's in Education. I am certified with Science Composite 6-12. I also attended a number of military educational programs to include a Masters in strategic global studies concentrating in the area of global logistics. 

Welcome to Mr. Olguin's 8th Grade Science class and  looking forward to work with you and your parents this school year. We will embark in a journey of scientific discovery where you will pave your road in understanding scientific concepts and apply them to every day life activities.   

So, buckle up!!! as we take off to this "a great journey". 

I will be there to provide you with the light as the road may get darker, at times....HO. 

8th Grade Syllabus

Dear Parents and Students,

Welcome to a new school year!  It is my pleasure to introduce myself to you as your child's 8th grade science teacher.  Please feel free to reach out to me if you have any questions or concerns.

8th Grade Pre –AP Classes Expectations:   100% of students are required to pass all science benchmarks to stay in Pre-AP Science.  We will be working on Commended Performance on the Science STAAR.

Class Rules:

1. Be Respectful- Respect the teacher, classmates and school property.

2. Be on Time- My door will close when the bell rings and if you aren’t seated in class you will be sent to get a tardy slip.

3. Be Prepared – Come to class ready to participate with your materials every day.

5. Be Courteous- Be kind with words and actions. Using profanity is NOT acceptable behavior.

6. No Grooming – Keep make-up, hair spray, nail polish, body sprays in your school bag.

7. No Electronic Devices– Keep these items at home or in your bag. They will be confiscated if they are out during class and turned into the front office.

Discipline Procedures:

  1. Warning
  2. Conference with the student
  3. Parent contact
  4. Detention (teacher-held)
  5. Staffing*
  6. Referral/ ISS


*Staffing is defined as a conference, which can be called at any time involving the student, his/her teacher(s), counselor, administrator and/or parent. Counselor, admin and teacher will meet to discuss and determine a time for such meeting.

Homework: Homework is due on the day assigned. If homework is late then points will be taken off.

Attendance: It is very important that you are in class every day to be successful. If you are absent, and excused, you will have one make-up day per absence to make up your work. It is your responsibility to find out what you missed and to copy the notes, make-up work, quizzes or tests. You must make arrangements: I will not remind you of this.

Retesting Policy:

You may have the opportunity to retest if you do not master the concepts. The highest grade earned on a retest shall be a 70. Retests will be given within 1 week after the original test.

To be allowed to retest the student must

  • turn in the original test with written corrections and explanations
  • attend 1 morning tutorial

Student Participation: There will be a number of projects and activities where the student will required to present, work with a group, and develop projects…100% participation is required.


Materials Needed:

3 Ring Binder (1 ½” - 2”)

1 set of dividers

1 package of loose leaf paper

1 package of construction paper

1 pair of scissors

1 bottle of liquid glue

1 pack of pencils

2 Black or blue pens

2 red pens

2 yellow highlighters

1 pack of Colored Pencils

1 pack of markers

1 Composition Book

*Science supplies by period:  Please look for the period you have science with me to find out which supplies you have been assigned to bring.  Any extras are welcomed and greatly appreciated. Thank you for your participation. 

2nd period – 2 bottles of hand sanitizer

3rd period – 2 liquid glue bottles

6th period – 2 packs of Lysol/Clorox wipes

7th period – 2 rolls of clear tape
