Science Syllabus 2017- 2018

Dear Parents and Students,

Welcome to a new school year!  It is my pleasure to introduce myself to you as your child's 7th or 8th grade science teacher.  

7th Grade Pre –AP Classes

  1. Students are required to produce one project per 9 weeks.
  2. Assessments will be longer and have open ended questions which will require students to explain their thinking in complete sentences.
  3. 100% of students are required to pass all science benchmarks to stay in Pre-AP Science.  We will be working on Commended Performance on Science STAAR.

Assignment Policy

*I assign work to be completed in class.  I seldom send homework. I try not to being that students have a lot of math and reading homework.  Students are allowed to finish any incomplete work at home.  Students are responsible for turning in all due assignments in a timely manner.  I will not be chasing you for grades. I will inform you of your average and missing assignments, the rest is up to you.  I encourage parents to keep up with your child’s grades online and keep in contact with me.  You can always send me an e-mail asking if your child has any missing grades.  I can check my e-mail and get back to you faster than leaving a message with the office.  If you don’t have an e-mail, I advise you to get one because it will make communication between teacher and parent easier and faster. 

 

Supplies: The following supplies will be used in my class.

Composition Notebook – needed by Wednesday, August 16th. 
We will use this almost everyday...

Liquid glue bottle (will be kept in class)

Large Pack of Pencils

Loose leaf paper
(For turned in assignments)

1 pocket folder (any color works) Student will keep their science papers organized here

1 pack of multicolor construction paper
(Kept in class)

*Science supplies by period:  Please look for the period you have science with me to find out which supplies you have been assigned to bring.  Any extras are welcomed and if we ever need more of anything, I will send a note home.  Thank you for your participation. 

1st period – 2 bottles of hand sanitizer

2nd  period – 2 paper towel rolls

4th period – 2 containers of antibacterial wipes

5th period – 2 bottles of hand sanitizer

6th period – 2 box gallon sized zip lock bags

7th period – 2 boxes of Kleenex

Mrs. Espindola’s Expectations

  • Expectations are different from rules.
  • A rule is like a law, if you break it there is a consequence.
  • An expectation is what I expect from you as a 8th grade student.

  2. I expect you to come prepared with materials needed in class.
  3. I expect you to have a positive learning attitude.
  4. I expect you to be respectful.
  5. I expect you to follow directions.
  6. I expect you to ask questions.
  7. I expect you to be a good listener.
  8. I expect to you to use correct school language.
  9. I expect you to try your best.
  10. I expect you to explore the world of science.

The Scientific Method

 

1. Question/Problem

          A. What is the scientific question you are trying to answer?

 

2. Purpose

          A. What are you trying to find out?

 

3. Hypothesis

          A. Make an educated prediction of the answer to your question.

          B. Write it in an, “If…, then…” statement.

 

4. Materials

          A. List all your materials to be used for your experiment.

 

5. Variables

          A. Independent Variable - What are you changing on purpose in your experiment?

          B. Dependent Variable - the change you will measure.

          C. Controlled Variables - The things you will keep the same.

 

6. Procedure

          A. Give detailed explanation of the steps you take to complete your experiment. 

          B. Write it as if giving step by step directions to an 8 year old.

 

7. Data

          A. Your measurement results should be represented here in some sort of graph.

 

8. Results

          A. A written explanation of your results.  You’re basically explaining your data here in words.

 

9. Conclusion        

          A. This is where you write about what you learned from your experiment. Was your hypothesis correct or incorrect?  How could you improve your experiment next time?

 

10. Bibliography

          A. List out all used resources here.
